what代指的是你脑袋想到的东西，这里是what进你的脑袋，是一个主动的动作。
东西进（主动动作）你的脑袋， comes
把东西带进你的脑袋, brings
你体会一下这两个，是有区别的的区别。
你要用bring的话是: What does the word 'America' bring to your mind.
这里what变成宾语了。the word 'America' 把什么带入你的脑袋
只有人才可以实施bring的行为，what 不具备行为能力，不能 bring，应该改为：
What do you bring to your mind when you hear America? （what 是bring 的提前宾语）
下面的表达办法更好：
What comes to your mind when you hear America?
What suggests to your mind when you hear America?
